University Preparatory Charter School for Young Men is currently seeking candidates for a Security Guard position for the 2025-2026 school year.

FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION OF UNIT:DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS : This is a security position responsible for maintaining order and providing protection to students, faculty and support service personnel within the UPREP school and on school property. The work is performed under direct supervision of the director of Safety and Security or other administrator.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES : (All need not be performed in a given position. Other related activities may be performed although not listed.)
Job Duties:
• Ensure smooth arrival, dismissal and transition of classes-assisting students with safe, on-time arrival to class, buses, etc.
• Patrol and monitor all areas of the property to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff and the security of the facility.
• Assist with supervision in the breakfast and lunch periods.
• Encourage and ensure that students follow code of conduct.
• Assist administration, police, and emergency personnel in handling emergencies or disruptive situations.
• Provide customer service to parents and other visitors.
• Collaborate with administration to help with the safety and security of the school.
• All SSO must be present in the halls during passing times actively moving all students to class.
• Each SSO will actively patrol their assigned areas during the class periods; do not congregate in one area or on the floor. Notify your supervisor before leaving the floor. SSO are not to leave the floor unless there is an emergency and/or administrator or Lead SSO is informed.
• Special attention should be given to the lavatories, stairwells, and exit areas in your assigned areas.
• SSO will assist faculty when requested. If the request requires a SSO to leave his/her assigned area, the Lead SSO must be notified and confirmed.
• When a SSO is called to a room, the SSO nearest the location is to take the call.
• After bus dismissal, all SSO are to return to their assigned post and “sweep” the areas to make sure that students staying after school are supervised. Loitering students should be taken to their grade level office. If the administrator requests, you are to escort the student out of the building.
• The exterior of the building needs to be checked a minimum of 3 times a day to ensure there are no weapons or behavior concerns are brewing.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the physical layout of assigned school and surrounding neighborhood; good knowledge of the District's regulations and policies pertaining to school order; working knowledge of child and adolescent behavior; working knowledge of the procedures of a citizen's arrest; working knowledge of conflict resolution; ability to detect potential safety hazards and disturbances; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to prepare simple reports; ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships with students and school personnel; ability to detain and/or apprehend violators of school rules and regulations, as per disorderly conduct, disorderly mischief or criminal trespass; ability to exercise sound independent judgment; willingness to work with children and adolescents; initiative; tact; discretion; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Minimum QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma; plus EITHER:
(A) One (1) year paid full-time or its part-time/volunteer equivalent experience as a security guard or in work involving the supervision, counseling, or instruction of youth.
(B) Satisfactory completion of a minimum of thirty (30) college-level semester credit hours.
(C) Any equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits in (A) and (B) above sufficient to indicate ability to do the work.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Current registration as a Security Guard with the New York State Department of State.
