Job Description

The Literacy Coach is an integral part of our Book Harvest team responsible for supporting all aspects of the Book Babies program, in particular providing books and literacy-rich home visits to children and their families from birth. This person will partner with families in creating a home literacy environment during their children's earliest years by providing quarterly literacy coaching visits to approximately 80-120 families each year. The Literacy Coach is a highly visible member of the Book Harvest team who brings strong interpersonal and communication skills, flexibility, and creativity and consistently represents the culture and core values of Book Harvest to our volunteers, our partners, and our community.

The Literacy Coach works based out of our office at 2501 University Dr. in Durham, NC reports to the Book Babies Manager, works most closely with other Literacy Coaches and the Book Babies Coordinator and is part of the Early Literacy department for Book Harvest Durham. Typical work hours span Monday-Friday and may include evenings and occasional Saturdays.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following activities:

Literacy Coaching (75% of time)

  • Maintain a caseload of approximately 100 families who receive quarterly home visits consistent with Book Babies Curriculum.
    • Each home visit includes modeling reading with the Book Baby and siblings, working in partnership with the caregiver about literacy goals and language milestones, and discussing ways to support language and literacy development at home.
    • Duties associated with the home visits include scheduling, travel, preparation for the visit in accordance with curriculum guidelines, timely and accurate data entry, administration of assessments and reflective supervision.

Special Events (10% of time)

  • Attend, provide support to the Book Babies Coordinator and engage with families at Book Babies events and meetings, including: an annual holiday celebration, an annual graduation, regular meetings, Book Babies storytime, and any additional events with Book Babies families.
  • Provide information to Book Babies families regarding special events to encourage participation.

General Administration (15% of time)

  • As part of a learning team, participate in regular Book Harvest staff meetings, one-on-one supervisory meetings, and departmental meetings;
  • Contribute to and sustain organizational diversity, equity, belonging, and inclusion (DEBI) efforts;
  • Participate in recruiting and hiring processes as appropriate across the organization;
  • Contribute to the preservation and development of institutional knowledge;
  • Participate in professional development opportunities as provided and recommended annually.

Qualifications

  • U.S. work authorization required
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish required
  • Academic and/or professional background in education, psychology and/or social work preferred;
  • Experience in literacy coaching, home visiting, parent engagement, and/or general early childhood education;
  • Strong planning and organizational skills with excellent attention to detail and the ability to work with minimal supervision;
  • Clear and compelling written and spoken communication skills;
  • Highly collaborative and talented in forging relationships and developing trust with a diversity of individuals;
  • Eagerness for personal growth and capacity in giving and receiving feedback; can proactively ask for help and anticipate problems;
  • Experience with, or a willingness to learn, Book Harvest tools, including Neworg and Paylocity;
  • Ability to handle sensitive or confidential matters professionally and with care;
  • Comfort with a flexible schedule and providing own transportation to fulfill job responsibilities: making home visits at night and on weekends is required to meet the needs of families;
  • Understanding of and dedication to the mission and culture of Book Harvest, which includes cultural competence, demonstrated commitment to social justice and youth literacy, and a commitment to active involvement in an anti-racist organizational culture.
