Position is located in West Sacramento.

Under the general direction of a Business Taxes Administrator (BTA) I, the Business Taxes Specialist (BTS) I will independently conduct the most difficult and complex investigations of tax evasion cases, serve in a lead capacity, schedule appointments, meet with taxpayers and their representatives, meet with other State agency personnel and District Attorneys, explain audit/or investigation findings, prepare appropriate reports, issue citations and appear in court proceedings. The position will have Limited Peace Officer status.

Travel will be required at least 50% of the time throughout the state.

Under Government Code 14200, this position may be eligible for part-time telework for eligible candidates residing in California.

Working Conditions

  • Position requires employee to be fingerprinted and successfully pass a background investigation.
  • Pass Peace Officer Training Course (PC 832: Arrest, Search Seizure). (For Investigators)
  • Work long and irregular hours including weekends, both in and out of the office and in various locations throughout the state.
  • To perform the essential duties of the position, staff must complete and pass PC 832 training.
  • Successful completion of PC 832: Arrest, Search & Seizure will be required prior to the conclusion of the probationary period and appointment into the BTS I classification.
  • Those who are unsuccessful or are unable to complete the necessary training prior to the conclusion of the probationary period will not receive appointment into the position.

Eligibility for Promotional Exams

In addition to meeting the Minimum Qualifications for the CLASSIFICATION, competition is limited to individuals who meet at least one of the following promotional examination criteria:

  • Have a permanent civil service appointment with CDTFA, or
  • Are current or former employees of the legislature for 2 or more years as defined in Government Code 18990, or
  • Are current or former non-elected exempt employees of the executive branch for 2 or more consecutive years as defined in Govt. Code 18992, or
  • Are persons retired from the United States military honorably discharged from active duty with a service disability or honorably discharged from active duty as defined in Government Code 18991. Applicants must provide a copy of discharge papers (DD 214) for verification purposes at the time of application.

Statement of Qualifications (SOQ)
